WEEJUNS BY CHRISTOPHER
Christopher Griffin, better known on Instagram by his handle, @plantkween, is a self-described “plant enthusiast, collector, and community builder.” Based in Brooklyn, Christopher shares his love for plants (of which he has a collection of 110 and growing), plant shops, botanical gardens, and other green spaces regularly on his blooming Instagram feed. But his posts aren’t just about vegetation. Christopher also has a unique and joyous sense of style, which he displays in equal measure next to the gorgeous greenery he documents, all in an effort to increase visibility for minority and queer communities existing in green spaces. Recently, we met up with Christopher in one of his favorite places in NYC, the Brooklyn Botanical Garden, to learn a thing or two about his plants, his style, and his Weejuns.
What originally made you fall in love with plants and botany? What drives you to keep working with and learning about them?
About three years ago, I moved into a cute but cold and sterile apartment. If you know this “kween” well, you know that she is all about warmth, bright colors, and life! I decided to skip on over to my neighborhood Home Depot to shop for a plant. I had always been afraid of buying plants because I knew I would be devastated if I had killed it (I’m over that now). Plus, my grandmother was really into gardening, and I never thought that I could live up to her green thumb goddess-ness. But, the apartment was tragically boring and lifeless, so I decided to take a gamble.??? ????????????
I ended up buying a pothos that needed a lil’ TLC. She was the most unique pothos in the bunch, so I knew she was the one for me. Took her home, repotted her and made a deal with myself: If I could keep this plant alive and it thrived, I would buy more plants.
When I tell you she grew, I mean she grew! I started investigating other plant shops, doing research on how to take care of my growing plant fam, and started documenting my botanical fascination via Instagram.
Equally, where did your love of fashion start? How did you develop your unique style POV?
As long as I can remember, I've been obsessed with fashion! Fashion is the way we choose to express ourselves and how we want the world to see us. I've always found it fun to be adventurous with it. Most of my inspiration comes from drag kings and queens and a general desire to make bold statements. I love fun prints, bright colors, unique designs, interesting textures, and quirky silhouettes. We are all born naked, dahling, the rest is drag.

Does your love of fashion ever bleed over into your love of plants, or visa versa? Do they ever influence each other?
In addition to plant life, my Instagram platform has provided me with a space to explore floral and plant-y prints and just fun fashion in general, so they have both influenced each other tremendously.
We spoke about how you love to search thrift stores for unique things. Do you have any tips for introducing thrifted pieces into your personal style?
My biggest tip would be not to think about it too hard. If you walk into a thrift store and there is something that catches your eye, buy it! Then have a little fashion show with yourself at home to see how you can incorporate it into your wardrobe.
Why do you love your Weejuns?
I love my Weejuns because they are comfortable and they make a bold statement, through fun colors, bold textures, and quirky accents.
